Over a million orphaned children in Iraq are still suffering from the impact of war. We don’t hear much about their country in the news any more. But years of violence, political instability and poverty have cost them more than any child should have to bear.

We are Al-Ayn. We are on the ground in Iraq, currently supporting over 63,000 orphaned children across the country. Since 2003, 114,786 orphaned children have gained security, stability and long-term well-being through Al-Ayn Child Sponsorship. 52,194 of these children have completed their sponsorship programme, over the past decade. Today, 2,965 orphaned children are still on our sponsorship waiting list, hoping for support. Can you afford to help?

The Al-Ayn Child Sponsorship is just £55 a month. This goes a long way in Iraq. It allows us to show orphaned children that they are valued and cared for. It allows us to engender recovery from trauma and mental health issues. It inspires hope.

Your support provides an orphaned child with urgent financial aid (in the form of regular monthly allowances), which is spent by their guardian on the essential needs of the child. Our comprehensive care system then gives the child access to medical care, mental health support, tuition, housing support and more.

Transparency at Al-Ayn

The monthly allowances your sponsorship provides help lift orphaned children and their families above the poverty line. They are distributed at local Al-Ayn branches throughout Iraq. Given the current pandemic, out team on the ground is working hard to deliver the support directly to the orphaned child’s family home if they are unable to visit their local branch.

At Al-Ayn, we take care to ensure that every penny you gift is spent on the needs of a child who has lost one or both parents. To ensure this, our dedicated follow-up teams are in regular contact with orphaned children and their guardians. Our staff and volunteers monitor the beneficiary support process and maintain detailed record keeping and careful documentation.

Meet Zainal-Abideen

This is Zain. We met him and his family on the outskirts of a remote village in Iraq. He lived on farmland but most of the crops and many of the cattle were no longer there. There was no maintained infrastructure, due to consecutive wars, violence, and political instability.

The structures throughout the journey seemingly built with mud and not much else, were what many were calling home. We were expecting to find Zain in similar conditions. However, on the other side of a little fence was a home that was newly-built. It had several bedrooms, electricity, furniture and, most importantly, warm smiles.

What is Gift Aid?

Gift Aid does not cost you a penny more, but can add an additional 25p to every £1 you donate. When Al-Ayn Social Care Foundation receives a donation from a UK taxpayer, we're entitled to claim an amount of tax (calculated at the basic rate of income tax in that year) paid on that donation. Once you have given your permission for us to do this on your behalf, there is no need for you to do anything else.

All that is required is that you must be a taxpayer and that would have paid or will pay sufficient Income and/or Capital Gains Tax to cover all the Gift Aid claimed on all your donations in that tax year. Please note that it is your responsibility to pay any difference.

The amount of tax we claim will be 25% of the total value of your donations in that tax year. Furthermore, if you are a higher taxpayer, you are also entitled to claim the difference between the basic rate which we will claim and the amount of tax you have actually paid. For further details on how you can do this, please contact your tax office. If your tax situation changes and your gifts will no longer be eligible for the Gift Aid scheme please contact us and we will amend your record accordingly.

Acceptance of any donation, gift or grant is at the discretion of Al-Ayn, and it is subject to its policy on Acceptance and Refusal of Donations. Al-Ayn will respect the intent of the donor relating to gifts for restricted purposes and those relating to the desire to remain anonymous. With respect to anonymous gifts, Al-Ayn will restrict information about the donor to only those staff members with a need to know.

Al-Ayn will not compensate, whether through commissions, finders' fees, or other means, any third party for directing a gift or a donor to the Al-Ayn.

Al-Ayn is committed to ensuring the experience of donating to Al-Ayn is as smooth as possible. Under charity law, charities are not permitted to refund donations, except in specific circumstances. If a donation has been made by error or the donor would otherwise like Al-Ayn to refund their donation, they are required to fill in a refund form and return it to Al-Ayn. Al-Ayn will process the request and inform the donor within 10 working days if it is possible to refund the donation.
